Coaches: Beena Nagappala & Shriya Shah
Their project was based on the research which showed a lack of oral health education and resources in students of inner city Detroit. Collaborating with the school and the Nurse practitioner at Nolan Elementary Middle School, they visited the school multiple times and educated students of different ages about the importance of oral health, using a presentation. Their presentation also included a demonstration of proper brushing techniques and a play that showcased what a regular visit to the dentist looked like. They also created an interactive dance that they performed to a song describing the importance of good oral hygiene. Team Teeth provided the studentswith resources to maintain their oral health- a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss for each of them. Finally the teachers were provided with information regarding SmileConnect, a program that helps provide oral health resources to those who need it. Overall, they’ve educated many students, provided them with resources and instructed them to maintain good oral health in the years to come.

" Bridge the Gap" Anjika Jain Coach: Laura Phou
According to a data analysis from the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2, adolescents with ASD are significantly more likely never to see friends outside of school (43.3%), never to get called by friends (54.4%), and never to be invited to school activities (50.4%).This year Anjika decided to change that, and through project Bridge the Gap, she coordinated more opportunities for these students so that they have more socialization experiences after school. She was able to positively affect the students lives and help them gain social interaction skills that they will use in the future.
Senior Team
"Success Starts with Small Steps."
Team Members: Gloria Stach, Gabe Stach, Rebecca Wong, Saanya Pherwani, Lingzi Liao, Celeste Dufour, Arav Agarwal, Eve Washington, Sahil Kapur
Coach: Laura Phou
Their project focused on helping students at International Technology Academy in Pontiac, MI. These students, in particular, are bilingual, as their first language is Spanish. Almost 47% of the students are living in poverty. In national ratings, the bottom 20% of family income students are five times more likely to drop out of high school compared to higher income students. International Technology Academy is a special school within the Pontiac School District for honors students. They must maintain good grades to stay in the school or else they will have to go back to their home Pontiac school in which harder social standards make it more difficult for them to succeed. The team’s goal was to make sure that these kids excel in all of their classes. They incorporated one-on-one tutoring with the students, kept data files on them, monitored their growth, and used interactive STEAM activities to allow them to reach their full potential. Their motto is “success starts with small steps.” Giving the kids the additional free personalized tutoring is the first step to them achieving their goals and dreams.
